How Do You Get to Sado Island by Ferry from Niigata and Naoetsu, and Get Around?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Sado Island in the Sea of Japan and plan how to move around once there. It follows the English pages of the Sado Tourism Association's site, Sado Sightseeing Navigation. We read them on 2026-10-04. Ferry schedules vary by season and weather, so confirm them with the ferry operator before you travel.
Two ferry routes
The association's access page says the island is reached by ferry from two mainland ports. The main route runs from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port. It has the most sailings and two kinds of boat:
- The car ferry, a conventional ship that carries passengers and vehicles. Niigata to Ryotsu takes 2 hours 30 minutes. It has open seating and reserved seats for an extra fee.
- The jetfoil, a high-speed hydrofoil with reserved seating only. Niigata to Ryotsu takes 1 hour 7 minutes.
The second route runs from Naoetsu Port in Joetsu City to Ogi Port in the south of the island. The car ferry takes 2 hours 40 minutes. One page says there is no jetfoil on this route, while the Tokyo access page lists a jetfoil with a time of 1 hour 15 minutes. Another page notes that the Naoetsu ferry is seasonal and may not run in winter. Check the operator's timetable.
From Tokyo to the ports
For the Niigata route, the access page for Tokyo gives these approximate times to Niigata Port, not including the ferry:
- By train: 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Niigata Station, then a local bus or taxi to the port.
- By car: 4 to 5 hours.
- By highway bus: 5 to 6 hours to Niigata Station, then a connecting bus or taxi.
For the Naoetsu route, it gives 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours by train, using the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu-Myoko Station and the Myoko Haneuma Line to Naoetsu, then a bus or taxi. By car it gives about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours. The site's overview also says the flights between Tokyo and Niigata and the highway buses between Tokyo and Naoetsu were suspended until further notice, although the Tokyo page still describes a daily Narita flight. Treat both as unconfirmed and check before you plan around either.
The site has separate access pages for Osaka, Nagoya, Aizuwakamatsu, Nagano, Kanazawa, Sapporo and Fukuoka. Its first-time visitor guide says people from the Kansai region can fly to Niigata Airport and take an airport shuttle bus to the port.
How long to stay
The island covers about 855 square kilometres with a coastline of about 280 kilometres. The tourism association's first-time guide says a day trip lets you see only one area and two days feels rushed. It recommends at least two nights and three days.
Getting around by car
The guide calls renting a car the most popular and most recommended way to move around, and advises booking early in busy seasons. It lists key driving times: Ryotsu Port to Aikawa, where the gold mine is, about 50 minutes; Ryotsu Port to Ogi, about 60 minutes; Ryotsu Port to Onogame, about 60 minutes. Circling the outer edge takes about 7 to 8 hours. Visitors from some countries need an official Japanese translation of their licence, together with an international driving permit where applicable, so check the requirements first.
By bus
There are no train lines on Sado. The guide says local buses are limited and need careful planning with the timetable and bus map. Buses do not accept IC cards such as Suica. It lists these points:
- Direct buses from Ryotsu Port to the gold mine are infrequent.
- You need to transfer to travel from Ryotsu Port to Ogi, and the ride takes about 2 hours one way.
- Few buses go to Yajima-Kyojima and Shukunegi, the places known for tub boats.
One-day, two-day and three-day bus passes can be bought online through the Niigata Kotsu Sado website. In person they are sold for cash only. For overseas visitors, the SADO NIIGATA Pass combines an unlimited three-day bus pass for Sado Island, the Niigata City Loop Bus and Sado Kisen ferry tickets. The site says it is available only to foreign tourists.
Taxi, bicycle and luggage
- Chartered taxis can be booked for three hours or five hours.
- Bicycles suit cyclists who want 40 km or more a day. Tourist information centres rent e-bikes called Eco-Da-Chari.
- A luggage delivery service moves bags between Ryotsu Port and Ogi Port.
- Coin lockers are listed on a separate page.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Ferry fares and timetables. The English pages we read do not give them.
- Whether the Tokyo flights and Naoetsu buses have resumed.
- Prices of the bus passes, the SADO NIIGATA Pass, taxis and rental cars.
