What Is Sado Like Beyond the Mine? Tub Boats, Noh, the Ibis and the Osado Mountains
This guide is for visitors who want to know what else Sado Island offers beyond the gold mine. It follows the English pages of the Sado Tourism Association's site, Sado Sightseeing Navigation. We read them on 2026-10-04. Events and opening details change, so check each organiser's own notice.
The island in brief
The site says Sado is shaped like an S or a Z, with the Osado Mountains in the north, including Kinpokusan at 1,172 metres, the Kosado Mountains in the south, and the Kuninaka Plain between them. It covers about 855 square kilometres, with a coastline of about 280 kilometres. The site notes that, because of the Tsushima Warm Current, Sado gets less snow than the mainland. The population was about 56,000 at the end of March 2018, and the main industries are agriculture and fishing.
Tub boats and the old port of Shukunegi
In the south, around Ogi, the site points to Shukunegi, a port village that prospered in the 17th century thanks to the gold mine and became a port of call for merchant ships. It has more than 100 houses with plank walls made from ship timber, and is designated a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings. Three private houses are open to the public for a fee. Nearby, the Yajima and Kyojima islets are linked by a red bridge, and the site says no reservation is needed for the tub boats there. These round tub boats are unique to the Minami Sado area. The site lists few buses to these places, so plan transport first.
Sea caves
Ryuodo Cave, in Kotoura, is called Sado's Blue Grotto and is the largest lava rock cave on the island. On calm days sunlight makes the water glow blue. Sea kayak tours go into the cave, and the site says a fast motorboat can also reach it.
Walking and cycling
For mountain walking, the site lists these routes in the Osado range:
- The most popular traverse, about 7 hours, recommended from mid-May to late October. The site suggests staying on the island the night before.
- The Donden Highland hike, about 2 hours 30 minutes, an easy route for beginners, from May to November.
- The Osado Ishina natural cedar trail, about 1 hour, from mid-May to early November, among cedars about 300 years old.
- The Shirane-aoi route, in the early spring flower season from mid-April to mid-May.
For cycling, the Sadoichi circular course around the island is 210 km, with an estimated 13 hours 17 minutes at 15 km/h, and the Osado loop is 130 km. Shorter e-bike courses include Lake Kamo at 21 km, the Ogi coast at 18 km and the rice-field ridge course at 23 km.
Noh, Onidaiko and puppets
The site calls Sado an island of history and culture with more than 400 cultural properties. Emperors, officials and artists were exiled here, and the island lists Noh events in spring to autumn, including candlelit Noh at Shoboji Temple in memory of Zeami, who was exiled to Sado, and bonfire Noh at Ryotsu. It also describes Onidaiko, in which a god reborn as an oni dances to taiko drums to pray for a good harvest, and mentions Bunya puppet theatre.
The crested ibis
The site says the island is home to the toki, or Japanese crested ibis. Its sightseeing page lists a Crested Ibis Museum on conservation, breeding and reintroduction, and an interaction plaza. The site asks photographers not to get too close to wild birds.
Food and drink
The site names locally caught yellowtail, snow crab, sea bream, oysters and sweet shrimp, plus Okesa persimmons, Le Lectier pears and figs. It says Sado has five sake breweries.
Autumn colour
The site recommends Momijiyama Park from the end of October to the middle of November, and the 30 km Osado Skyline for drivers. A Sado Gold Mine page adds maples around the mine.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Admission and tub boat prices.
- Current event dates. The Noh timetable we found was for 2025.
- Where the toki can be seen in the wild.
